Dave Anderson, Lead Sewer Maintenance Worker

July 14, 2025 marks 40 years since Dave first clocked in with the City of West St. Paul. Dave got his start at WSP when he traded in a seasonal job on a blacktop crew for something full-time with our Streets Division. After a couple of years above ground, he made the move to Utilities, where he’s been leading the charge for more than three decades. “If I didn’t like what I do, I wouldn’t be here so long,” he said, and that’s clear to anyone who’s worked alongside him.

In his time, Dave has seen a lot of change, especially when it comes to technology. Gone are the old lift stations with outdated equipment. In their place: modern, electronic systems that still run 24/7, just like they always have. Dave’s still out there troubleshooting when things go wrong, answering those unexpected calls at all hours. “You never know what kind of call you’re going to get,” he said. “Every day is a new adventure.”

Dave is the kind of person who doesn’t need a map—literally. After decades of work in the field, he knows every line, manhole, and detail of the city’s underground systems by heart. When someone has a question, Dave’s the guy they ask. And when there’s a job that needs doing, he’s the guy who shows up. “We’re a tight-knit group” he said, “Everyone helps out when we need to.”

If you ask Dave what advice he has for the next generation of public works professionals, he keeps it simple: “If you’re looking for longevity, this is the right job.” He doesn’t have any big retirement plans just yet, and he’s hoping to stick around a few more years. When that time comes, he’s looking forward to a little more time on the snowmobile, in the woods, and out on the lake.

Until then, he’s still showing up, still getting those late-night calls, and keeping WSP running smoothly from the ground up. Thanks for 40 years, Dave. We’re lucky to have you.
