In Minnesota in 2020, 10% of home fires were caused by heating devices. Most home fires occur in the winter and peak in January. Most Minnesota heating fires occur in fireplaces and chimneys.
Heating Safety Tips
As the temperatures drop, many people turn to space heaters for extra warmth. Stay safe by following these tips:
- KEEP PORTABLE HEATERS 3FT AWAY FROM ANYTHING FLAMMABLE.
- TURN PORTABLE HEATERS OFF WHEN LEAVING THE ROOM OR GOING TO SLEEP.
- ALWAYS PLACE SPACE HEATERS ON THE GROUND, AND PLUG THEM DIRECTLY INTO THE OUTLET.
- NEVER USE YOUR OVEN TO HEAT YOUR HOME.
- ONLY USE SPACE HEATERS THAT AUTOMATICALLY SHUT OFF IF THEY TIP OVER.
